Our Methodology

All calculations use well-established financial formulas that are fully documented on each calculator page. Key methodological choices include:

• Compound interest — Monthly compounding using the standard formula
• FI Number — Annual spending divided by Safe Withdrawal Rate (default 4%, based on the Trinity Study)
• Default assumptions — 7% annual return (S&P 500 historical average, inflation-adjusted), 2.5% inflation (based on Federal Reserve targets and BLS CPI data)
• Possibility Score — Projected portfolio at FI date divided by FI Number, scaled 0–100
